For the second year in a row, the Ministry of Agriculture’s crops extension specialists held Crop Diagnostic School as a virtual event. The event featured speakers from the ministry, the Water Security Agency, North Dakota State University, the Irrigation and Crop Diversification Centre and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Topics included soil fertility, compaction, insects, canola disease, herbicide resistant weeds, herbicide injury diagnosis and irrigation; including an overview of the Lake Diefenbaker Irrigation Expansion project.

The move to an online format allowed us to record the sessions so producers can view them later. Below are the links to the free recordings of the presentations from each day of the event, along with an overview of what each video will cover.

Soil Fertility and Compaction
Specialists explain how phosphorus limitations can affect crop production, demonstrate crop responses to phosphorus fertilizer on phosphorus deficient soils and talk about the effects of soil compaction, symptomology in the field, how to identify and ways to help minimize and remediate compaction.

Insects and Canola Disease
Specialists discuss insects in Saskatchewan crops, sclerotinia and clubroot in canola and the pest surveys that produce forecast maps and monitor disease and insect pressure in the province.

Herbicide Resistant Weeds and Herbicide Injury Symptoms
Specialists discuss mechanisms of herbicide resistance and how it begins, current research being done on herbicide resistant weeds in Western Canada and diagnosing herbicide injury symptoms.

Irrigation and the Lake Diefenbaker Expansion Project
Specialists provide an overview of irrigation in the province, what types of horticulture crops are produced, how to get certification for irrigation in Saskatchewan, how to schedule irrigation using various technologies and an in depth look into the Lake Diefenbaker Expansion Project.
