Province Sees Record Organ And Tissue Donation
Saskatchewan has achieved remarkable success in organ and tissue donation, reaching record-breaking numbers. In the fiscal period from April 1, 2022, to March 31, 2023, the province recorded the highest number of deceased donors in a single year, with a total of 30 individuals. Additionally, there were 46 adult kidney transplants performed during the same period, marking the second-highest number ever achieved in the province.
The positive impact of organ and tissue donation extended beyond kidneys, as 276 patients generously donated ocular tissue, contributing to improved vision for residents of Saskatchewan.
Transplantation serves as a vital treatment option for individuals suffering from organ damage caused by injury or disease. Additionally, tissue donations can significantly enhance the quality of life for individuals of all ages. The increased number of registered donors has led to longer and healthier lives for transplant recipients. Currently, there are 800 adults and pediatric residents in Saskatchewan benefiting from donated organs.
Although polls indicate that 90 percent of Canadians support organ and tissue donation, only 32 percent have registered their donation wishes. To address this gap, Saskatchewan established the Organ and Tissue Donor registry in September 2020. So far, nearly 21,000 eligible Saskatchewan residents have registered their intent to donate organs and/or tissues. Any individual aged 16 or older with a valid Saskatchewan Health Services Card number can participate in the registry and express their intention to be a donor.
