Province Suspends Organ Donation Program Due to COVID Surge

As the province deals with a fourth wave of COVID-19, Saskatchewan’s organ donation program has been suspended indefinitely due to a lack of resources brought on by the pandemic.

The SHA says if residents who are registered donors pass away, their organs will not go to people who need them. However, the province will continue to provide immediate tissue donations to eye patients.

Currently, Saskatchewan health care is being restructured to redeploy staff and other resources to help with record COVID-19 hospitalizations. On Thursday, the SHA reported over three-quarters of people in the hospital with COVID-19 were not fully vaccinated.

All elective procedures and other services such as children’s surgeries, therapies, heart and stroke prevention clinics, and services for sexual health and women’s health have been cancelled in order to divert staff to emergency rooms and intensive care units.

Saskatchewan currently has one of the lowest vaccination rates in Canada.
