KFD Reminds Public to Take Extra Precautions During Halloween

Hello, Cody Phinney back for another update from the Kindersley Fire Brigade.

Hope everyone had a safe and fun Thanksgiving! Recently our members have been out and about testing fire hydrants to ensure they’re in good working condition before they might be needed. During our inspections we came across a number that were not easily visible to our personnel from the road. All fire hydrants must be clearly visible and free from obstructions. If you have a hydrant on your property, ask your self is it visible from either driving directions on your street, can firefighters connect to it with their hydrant valves and hoses easily with nothing in interfering with that procedure. Maintaining an area around a hydrant that is free of snow and debris can make a difference during an emergency.

We also took some time over our last training night to prep some of our trucks for the approaching winter weather. Part of this prep includes removing the skid packs from the side by sides, and adding heat pans to the trucks to prevent the pumps from freezing. Our PubEd team will be busy this week hosting the P.A.R.T.Y. Program at the high school. The P.A.R.T.Y. Program involves acting out a mock car accident caused by driving while under the influence. The scenario involves all fields of first responders; R.C.M.P, E.M.S., and Fire all have roles to play. The idea behind the program is to show the teens the effects of impaired driving in a controlled setting.

With Halloween quickly approaching I would like to remind everyone to take extra precautions while driving around town that evening. There will be lots of kids dashing around from house to house in search of candy, and they may not be looking both ways in their excitement. So slow down and be extra vigilant for pedestrians. And for our trick or treaters and their parents, incorporating high visibility reflective stripes or materials into your costume can greatly increase how visible you are in the dark.

Happy Halloween!
