Take all the time you need when reading

March 02, 2020

Take time to enjoy that book!

There’s great joy in reading a good book – and what’s better is that when you slow down and really absorb what you are reading, you could even reduce stress and cure burnout.

Reading slowly and engaging with a book means putting away your phone and staying away from social media, which has been proven to affect our attention spans negatively.

One of the key advantages of slower reading is that you are better able to take in new information and make connections to other facts.

Similar to making connections, reading slowly helps you pick up more of the symbolism, foreshadowing, and other literary devices you might be missing if you’re reading more quickly.

In fact, while it may seem counterintuitive, reading more slowly might result in you reading more than your speedy counterpart. Why is that? Because, in order to read more slowly and intently, you may find yourself setting aside time to read, resulting in an almost scheduled reading time, rather than just picking up a book when you have a few spare moments.

While you may feel like you’ ll be stuck ticking off titles on the ‘100 books to read before you die’ list, there is no shame in spending ages with a book.
