Kindersley District Music Festival Wraps Up

The Kindersley District Music Festival was conceived in a meeting held on April 16, 1962. Now, 56 years of performance later, the Festival of Stars featured 59 performances and the handing out of numerous scholarships and medallions.

I first encountered the KDMF in the late 1970’s, performing an aria in the “senior” category (I was just in my 20’s at the time). The festival has continued strong – the organization also sponsors a Christmas Carol Festival.

Performers come from North, South, East and West! This year 90 musicians as young as five participated in the two week Festival, with over 290 adjudicated performances.

Three judges were present: Marcia McLean (Vocals), Katherine Dowling (Piano) and Jennifer McAllister (Instrumental). Suiting the needs of the participants, each served as both judge and teacher – with a positive approach to learning and improving the students’ skills.

The Festival Committee, chaired by Calla McLean, were excited to see six participants recommended to the 2019 Provincial Finals to be held May 30th to June 2nd (Moose Jaw, SK). Those recommended were: Taylor Baker, Rachel Krogstad, Sidney Martin, Andrew Glass, Isaac Paulhus and Ronan Paulhus.

The Kindersley District Music Festival Association is hosting their annual meeting on Monday, April 8th at 7:30 at the Norman Richie Community Centre. Everyone is welcome to attend and hear the reports of the work of the Festival Association. They will also be setting up their executive for this coming year – new committee members are welcome!
