HOW TO TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS: CORRECTING BAD BEHAVIOUR

CORRECTING BAD BEHAVIOUR

A dog is a very repetitive animal.  They have short attention span and memory, but they learn and do by association.  People say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but it’s a simple method of correction.  You have to find a means to make then not want to do a negative behaviour again.  ALWAYS MAKE THE RIGHT THING EASY AND THE WRONG THING HARD-REWARD THE SLIGHTEST CHANGE.

  • Re-channel your Dog’s Energy

Sometimes dogs get into mischief because they are bored and want to play.  Their playing often leads to them getting into things they should not, such as chewing on shoes or ripping pillows.  Take time out with out your dog a few times a day and help relieve some of that energy.

  • Control your Dog

You’ll never succeed in teaching your dog not to do something after the act has been completed.  Yelling at them or any other type of correction at that point is useless.  By then, they don’t know what they’ve done and will just get scared and gain fear from you.  You must catch them in the act and scold them at that point.  Stay away from being harsh towards your dog.  This could lead to the dog feeling their need to defend themselves. Pull them away, in a firm, voice tell them no.  After a few moments, reconnect with your dog so they can associate you being angry with their actions and not them.

  • Take your Dog to Obedience School

If all else fails, you can send your dog to training school.  Here they will learn new habits but it will still be your job to enforce the training methods at home

By following these steps, you can successfully retrain your dog and TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS
