As national motocross racing came to a close over the August 17-20 weekend, Saskatchewan was well represented at the CRMC Grand Championship.
For the first time in over 25 years, a western track held the popular event, and riders from several provinces travelled to Kamloops BC to battle for their titles.
“It was a challenging and busy weekend,” commented Daryl Murphy, an acting official at the event, “the larger crowds, the heat, and the intense races kept both officials and organizers moving fast.”
About 300 racers were able to make it, less than what the organizers were hoping for. “Saskatchewan and Alberta each had a good number of entries,” noted Murphy, “but BC numbers were not what I was expecting. Likely the forest fires in the province were major factors in the low numbers.”
The BC fires didn’t affect just the entries but also the track and vision conditions as a hot wind sucked the ground dry on Thursday and Friday. “Friday we had to call a break before the last seven motos of the day,” recalled Murphy, “the track was just getting too dry and dusty to continue safely.” Even after watering, the track was far from ideal, forcing officials to roll four motos over to Saturday’s already full schedule.
Fortunately, Saturday and Sunday dawned with lower temperatures and next to no wind. “Without the wind and heat acting like blow-dryer, the tracks were in tip-top national condition.” Murphy noted that as an official, keeping a close eye on the track conditions is just one of the things he has to watch out for during an event. “It’s not just about going by the book and calling ‘fair’ or ‘foul’ but about making calls that keep racers safe and improve our sport .”
Murphy is not alone in his passion for keeping the motocross sport alive and well. “The family spirit is amazing to see. Racers are individual, they are alone in the race and you could almost say they race for themselves, but they don’t. They race for their team of family and friends who make these trips again and again.”
