The University of Regina’s track & field teams had their first away meet of the 2015-16 schedule over the weekend, and Joy Becker (pictured) and Ahmed Alkabary both had first-place finishes for the Cougars at the Sled Dog Meet in Saskatoon.
Becker won two events, finishing first in both the long jump (5.61m) and the 60-metre dash (7.82 s). Alkabary’s first-place performance came in the long jump with a top effort of 6.84 metres.
The men’s team had four second-place finishes, including rookie William Chamney in the 300-metre dash (36.34 s) and Sean Hooper in the 3000-metre run (9:02.72). The men’s 4×200-metre relay team was second with a time of 1:32.60, while the 4×400 team was also second (3:25.17). There were also three thirds on the men’s side, including Simon Hauser in the triple jump (13.14m), Ben Rumpel in the high jump (1.90m), and Marc Turmel in the 3000 (9:05.32).
Avery Westberg had a second-place effort in the 3000 (10:26.05) and the women’s team also had five third-place finishes – Adriana Davis in the 1000-metre run (3:00.55), Geselle Dela Merced in the long jump (5.16m), Reagan Fedak in the shot put (12.15m), Brooke Shatkowski in the weight throw (13.57m), and the 4×400 relay team (4:04.63).
The Cougars will be back in action next weekend at the Golden Bear Meet in Edmonton.
