Saskatchewan Motocross Association

“Family, Friends, Fun” is the motto of the Saskatchewan Motosport Association, and they truly live it.

From home tracks to national competitions, and family weekend getaways to lone recreational moto-crossing, there is something for everyone in the motocross sport.

Boasting over 230 members, the Saskatchewan Motocross Association, also known as the SMA, seeks to “promote, grow, and support the sport of motocross, both recreationally and competitively in both Saskatchewan and Canada.”

For the SMA board of eight members, this means dedicating their time to connect the  local community clubs scattered across the province.  Sometimes this means scheduling competitive races, or assisting individuals in pursuing their passion for the sport.

The months of May to September see this played out dramatically as clubs take their turn to host competitions.  With rider ages ranging from 4 – 50+, whole families travel around Saskatchewan to participate in the excitement.

To keep the competitions running smoothly, the SMA forms classes, formed by the age, skill level, and sometimes by the gender of the rider.  As the skill and/or age level of the rider improves, they are moved up through the ranks until they reach the pro-rider status, giving them an opportunity to compete at a national and sometimes at an international level.

The SMA’s focus, however, is not just on the competitions; it’s about personal growth, and learning something new every day.

“No matter who or how old you are, I believe that moto-crossing will benefit you in some way;” Daryl Murphey emphatically stated.   Murphey ought to know, as over 10 years on the SMA board, and several years of racing before that, brought rich friendships and life-changing experiences to his life.

“This sport is unlike any other I have seen,” explained Murphey. “Families and individuals network until you have groups of them, and they are so tightly knit that they cheer one another’s successes, and comfort those who have hard times; it’s truly a remarkable thing to be a part of.”

The SMA is always looking for members, volunteers, and new clubs to spring up; you can connect with them on Facebook at their page, Saskatchewan Motosport Association, on twitter at @Moto_sma, and at their website saskmotocross.com.
