A Quick Update with Our Region’s MLA
As May draws to a close, so does the 2018 spring session in the Legislative Building in Regina; so I decided to catch up with Ken Francis, the Kindersley Consistency’s MLA, to see what was new in his world.
“To be honest, between session and my new duties as MLA, I feel like the last three months have been a blur.” Francis was elected as the area’s MLA on March 1, 2018, and then started straight into legislative’s spring session only a week later.
Since then, Francis has been able to represent Kindersley with various committees and motions in addition to his internal government work. For example, last Monday was the first time Francis made an amendment motion on the Privatization Act, calling for the government to not sell off any crown corporations without first getting input from the people of Saskatchewan.
In between moments of session, Francis has been able to develop working relationships with the various ministries that have significance in the Kindersley area; including the ministry of health, energy/resources, and transportation.
Francis noted that as session will be ending May 31, he will have more time to be in his Kindersley office. The office, located at 1001 Main Street in the Kaje Building, will soon be more recognizable thanks to a sign installation within a few weeks.
So far though, that hasn’t stopped people from being able to find and chat with Francis. Even though he is currently in session down in Regina from Monday to Thursday, he is in Kindersley during the weekend and opens his office to all during the day.
“So far I have had good Fridays where people are able to come and discuss their concerns and ideas with me, and I have been able to attend to several matters as they happen in our area.” Francis says he is looking forward to session ending so he can turn more attention to the Kindersley area.
For example, as the Highway 7 passing lanes from Delisle to the Alberta border progress in their design and study stage this summer, Francis aims to keep a hand on the pulse of the matter as the ministry of transportation nears the R.M.s of the Kindersley area in their westward move down Highway 7.
Last weekend also marked one of the first major Kindersley events Francis was able to attend as our MLA, as the Great Plains College graduation ceremony included a heartfelt graduation address from Francis. He says he looks forward to attending more events like that all across the constituency.
“Obviously you can’t attend every event that you would like to, but I believe that attending events around the constituency plays a very important role in being the best representative I can be for this area.”
As a part of creating this personable and approachable presence in this constituency, Francis will be co-hosting a golf tourney at the Eston Riverside Golf Course at Eston on June 15.
