A Quick Update with Our Region’s MLA
While July means an escape to the lake for many people, Kindersley Constituencies MLA, Ken Francis, hasn’t skipped a beat when it comes to representing both the people and the government, depending on the function.
Even though session is now over, over the past several weeks Francis has been able to represent the people in his area during his meetings with the various ministries that have significance in the Kindersley area; including the ministry of health, energy/resources and transportation. Many of these talks center around providing services while being fiscally responsible. “Financial responsibility is a double-edged sword,” said Francis, “it must be used wisely and carefully.”
Turning from being the voice of the people to the ear of the government, Francis has also focused his attention more fully to the lives of the people in his consistency. Some days that means wrestling through the PST and insurance technicalities for out-of-province companies completing work in Saskatchewan, on other days, it means acting on behalf of the government at different functions.
For example, just last week Francis represented Premier Scott Moe and the Minister of Trade and Export Development and Minister of Immigration and Career Training Jeremy Harrison at the opening of a new grain elevator in Reford, SK. This week, Francis also made an address at the Ag in Motion agricultural trade show in Langham, SK.
In addition to those types of functions, Francis also sat in several Rural Municipality meetings in the area, including the RM of Oakdale near Coleville; the RM of Milton near Marengo; the RM of Chesterfield near Eatonia; and the RM of Prairiedale near Major, SK.
Francis said it was good to sit in on the council meetings, as it gave him an idea of the various concerns or victories each RM was experiencing. His presence at the meetings also gave folks in the area the opportunity to discuss worries or “wish-lists,” confident that their concerns would make their way up to the appropriate government body.
In the end, Francis says it is about being both the voice of the people and the ear of the government. “It is my role to hear the concerns, and note the interests of the people in my constituency, then bring them forward to the government.”
Francis noted that while he is still so new in the government world, he doesn’t have a large “pull” per say, with the government when it comes to addressing some concerns. However, at the same time, he will always be able to be the messenger of the news, able to convey it in the way the government will be able to hear. “So far many folks understand the position I am in, and are mostly just glad that I came to visit and hear them and their stories.”
