The gripping thriller follows that of a woman who is battling alcoholism and depression sees something unthinkable happen in a house she passes while riding a train. Hawkins who has seen huge success with her novel has revealed her inspiration for the book came from an unlikely source — her less than exciting daily train journey on the District Line.

Hawkins explains that she used to commute around London a lot and one particular route, which took the District Line overground used to break down all the time. She says she would sit there and stare into the houses right by the track and hope something interesting would happen. She says that nothing interesting ever happened but it did make her start to wonder what she would do if she saw something that shocked her.

Inspiration it seems comes from all sorts of places, and Hawkins is not the only one to have a flash of brilliance while going about her day. JK Rowling came up with her idea for Harry Potter while traveling on a train, and the idea glittering people and vampires came to Stephanie Meyer in a dream resulting in the Twilight series.
