“Don’t Wait, Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years.”

Fire Prevention Week

October 9-15 is Fire Prevention Week across Canada. This year’s theme stresses the necessity of maintaining smoke alarms: “Don’t Wait, Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years.”

Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. The manufacture date can be found on the back of the appliance.
  • Install smoke alarms inside each bedroom, and outside each sleeping area.
  • To prevent false alarms, never install smoke detectors closer than 10 feet from a cooking appliance.
  • Be sure to have at least one smoke alarm on every level of the house. Yes, that includes the basement.
  • Larger homes may require extra alarms to ensure proper coverage.
  • Synchronize all smoke alarms so that when one goes off, the rest follow.
  • Install both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms, or a dual-sensor alarm. Ionization alarms provide better protection against flaming fires, and photoelectric detectors are more sensitive to smoldering fires.

Remember, in the case of a fire, a functioning smoke detector provides your best chance of being alerted before it is too late. Ensure your home is adequately equipped with these life-saving appliances, and don’t neglect their maintenance.
