There was an air of definite excitement as the riders prepared for their first race of the season last Sunday.
Held near the town of Assiniboia, the event saw some 240 riders testing their skill and daring on the carefully prepared tracks. “The turnout was actually phenomenal,” noted Daryl Murphy, SMA member and acting official for the day’s races. “It was great to see everyone working together to make this large of an event run so smoothly.”
The weather also worked in the event’s favor, as perfectly timed showers late Saturday evening prepped the track for the Sunday races. The track not only held up throughout the day, but created some of the most spectacular racing many had seen in Saskatchewan for quite some time.
As all good things need to start with some planning, Murphy gathered the riders for the briefing of rules, flags, and other information pertaining to the day. “The briefing is vital, as it sets the tone for the rest of the day,” Murphy emphasized. “It also gives the official a greatly needed edge, as he is the one who has to make the split-second decisions for the safety and integrity of the race.”
