Highlights from April 25 Council Meeting

Council proclaimed the week of April 25 to May 1, 2016 as Public Rail Safety Week in recognition of Operation Lifesaver, a public/private partnership aimed at working with the rail industry, governments, police services, media, and the public to raise awareness and reduce avoidable accidents and injuries caused by collisions at rail crossings.

Council proclaimed the week of May 1 to 7, 2016 to be Emergency Preparedness Week in recognition that community safety is the responsibility of everyone. The proclamation also encouraged citizens to participate in educational activities on emergency preparedness.

In support of public works engineers, administrators, and operational staff and the substantial contributions they make to our everyday health and welfare, Council joined all levels of government across Canada in proclaiming May 15 to 21, 2016 as National Public Works Week. The proclamation recognizes the dedicated efforts of public works professionals who are responsible to design, build, operation, and maintain the transportation, water supply, and wastewater systems, public buildings and other structures and facilities essential to serve citizens on a daily basis.

Council directed Administration to enter into contract agreements with Mobile Paving Ltd. and Prairie Paving (2006) Inc. for, respectively, the 2016 Asphalt Paving Project and 2016 Sidewalk Restoration Project. The two firms were the lowest bidders for their respective projects – $750,274.54 plus GST for the 2016 Asphalt Paving Project, and $244,757.04 for the 2016 Sidewalk Restoration Project.

Council directed the Acting Mayor and Chief Administrative Officer to enter into a one-year Farmland Cash Lease Agreement for land located at SE 09-29-23 W3 at a lease fee of $1,800 per year.

Administration was directed to draft a letter of support to the West Central Transportation Group to lobby the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure for a street light that illuminates the Kindersley and District Plains Museum intersection along Highway 7, and that the light be located on the north side of the highway.
