Huskies Fall Recap: Women's Soccer

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s soccer team put together its most successful season in program history in 2015.

Under Canada West Coach of the Year Jerson Barandica-Hamilton, in his second year with the program, the Huskies notched 10 wins in a season for the first time in team history. Saskatchewan finished the regular season 10-3-1 to finish first in the Canada West East Division.

The Huskies finished a perfect 7-0 on home turf at Field 7 in PotashCorp Park to extend their undefeated streak at home to 21 regular season matches.

After losing to the Pronghorns early in the regular season, the Huskies made sure to take care of business with a 3-0 quarter-final win over Lethbridge in the post-season. With the victory the Huskies earned the right to host the Canada West Select Six Championship November 5-8 in Saskatoon.

Saskatchewan battled the Trinity Western Spartans in the conference semifinal on Saturday, falling on the short side of a 1-0 final. In Sunday’s bronze medal match a berth in the CIS Championships was still on the line for the winner. Despite pressing for a late equalizer the Huskies could not catch the break they needed, dropping a 1-0 decision for the second day in a row.

The Huskies had four Canada West All-Stars in Erica Hindmars, Meagan Manson, Jenelle Zapski and Jennifer Miller. Manson would go on to be named a CIS Second-Team All-Canadian for her season.

The Huskies took advantage of an early home schedule playing four of their first six matches at home. A 2-1 loss on the road to Lethbridge was the only hiccup in Saskatchewan’s September schedule as they finished the month 5-1.

A tough road trip on the coast dropped the Huskies to 5-3 with back-to-back losses at the hands of Victoria and UBC. Saskatchewan would recover to post a 5-0-1 record down the stretch to secure top spot in the division at seasons end.
