KCS News: Canadian Student Leadership Conference

By Kathryn Sawatzky

Recently, I attended the Canadian Student Leadership Conference in Edmundston, New Brunswick. Throughout the three days of pre-conference where we toured the coast from Moncton to Edmundston, and four days of the actual conference I learned so much about how to be a “leader of today”. There were a variety of speakers at the conference, including Keynote speakers Alvin Law, Justin Boudreau, JC Pohl and Tyler Durman who all had something different to say about what it takes to be a leader. Each speaker touched on a different aspect of leadership.

As well as hearing some amazing and inspirational speakers, we had the opportunity to do some incredible activities in Edmundston. We got to do an “Amazing Race” where we walked around the city and saw some of the scenery it has to offer. Edmundston borders Maine, so we got to walk across the bridge that connects the two and almost go into the United States. It was really neat to see that such a small city has so much culture. Another day, we walked to the top of a ski hill and could see the whole city as well as the forest bordering it. The leaves were just changing from green to red and orange, it was beautiful. An additional highlight of the trip was going to the botanical gardens or “Grand Grouille“. There were around 3,500 pumpkins on display, and many mythical creatures set up that glowed in the dark at night. Touring around the gardens was one of my favourite parts of the trip.

CSLC was an incredible learning experience for me. From touring around a beautiful province and gaining so much knowledge about leadership, it was an amazing trip. I learned so many new things that I can take back to the Student Leadership Council at KCS.
