Kindersley bowler Wayne Beilie, who recently smashed his way to the top nine male bowlers in Southwestern Saskatchewan, now has his eye on the provincials.
Prior to the Great Western Open Provincials that will be held in Saskatoon over Easter weekend, five regions of Saskatchewan picked their winning individuals in order to lead their zone to glory.
As a result, the Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Regina, North East and South Zones each held a tournament to pick the top 9 male and female players of the weekend. For Beilie, that meant traveling down to Moose Jaw for the South Zone tournament held on the weekend of January 13.
Beilie and 28 other men from southern communities like Weyburn, Shaunavon, Gull Lake, Estevan and Moose Jaw tested their mettle in 16 games, 8 games on each day.
Beilie, who has been bowling ever since he was 9 years old, is no stranger to bowling tournaments, but that weekend carried a special punch as Beilie carved out over 300 points in 8 of his 16 games.
“I have never had a tournament like that before,” said a slightly surprised Beilie. “I have bowled pretty well in the past, but that weekend broke all of my previous records.”
Beilie not only made it to the top 9 male players in his region, he carried the entire tournament, finishing with a whopping 4, 377 points, leading the scoresheet by 86 points. With these results, Beilie qualified for both the singles’ and men’s division.
As Beilie qualified for both the single and team events, he will have 28 games to prepare for, 10 games under the single division and 18 under the team event.
The other top 8 bowlers which now make up the South Zone team are all located in the Weyburn/Moose Jaw area, which makes group practice a near impossibility. But Beilie says he isn’t worried; he plans to keep up with his twice a week games with his bowling league in Kindersley for his practise for the Provincial event.
