Two Klippers players represented the Klippers team and the SJHL at the SJHL/MJHL Showcase in Regina January 15 and 16.
Kindersley Klipper’s goalie Justice Close and forward Keillan Olson each joined team Kunitz, a team featuring players born in ’98 and ’97.
Between the SJHL and the MJHL, 160 eligible college players were hand-picked for the event by their coaches. The teams each played two games at the Co-op Centre in Regina, in front of scouts from both Canada and the USA. Both Close and Olson represented their home and the provincial team well during the event.
Team Kunitz hit the ice against Team Belfour from the MJHL on Monday’s third and final game. Close didn’t come out until about the halfway through the second period, but once he was there, he made his presence known by saving 22 shots in the 29 minutes played, aiding Team Kunitz to reach a 4-2 game.
Team Kunitz didn’t see the ice again until the final matchup of the event with Team Zajac from the MJHL. Olson started the scoring off on the right foot for Team Kunitz and Close tended the goal from the start of the game. Both players were instrumental in propelling the team to a neat 5-2 win to cement the SJHL supremacy in the event, and Close became known as the only goaltender to win both of his games.
The showcase was a little hard on the MJHL as the SJHL won five out of the six games during the whole event.
