Letter to the Editor: Respecting Our Democratic Right

Dear Editor

A federal election looms on the horizon. I see that Cypress-Hills Grasslands has a full slate of candidates – that’s a sign of a healthy democracy.

There’s some talk on coffee row and in social media that I find disturbing. One of the cornerstones of our democracy is free elections with the secret ballot. In the privacy and secrecy of the voting booth, every voter gets the chance to vote as they choose. Surely one should take the opportunity to vote according to their conscience. Hopefully each of us will have considered the policies of the various parties and vote for the one that best represents our views.

I’m told that some folks are suggesting that we abuse that sacred right and responsibility, and vote “strategically” to prevent one or other of the old-line parties from winning. In other words we are supposed to hold our noses no matter how bad the odour of what we’re doing, abandon our principles, and vote PC if we despise Justin, or Liberal if we believe a Scheer government would erode hard-won human rights.

I’m very grateful that I live in a free society. So I’ll respect my democratic right. In the voting booth I’ll not vote “strategically” – I’ll vote for the party that best represents my social and political concerns.
