Little did Jeanette Jackson know that a hum-drum trip to Saskatoon and last-minute concert attendance would still affect her and her community one year later.
The Kindersley area homeschool mom of two is always looking for ways to inspire and educate her children, so when, last February, she saw posters advertising a recorder quartet from Montreal her interest was immediately peaked.
“The Flute Alors were brought in to Saskatoon on a Prairie Debut tour, and at the time, my fourth-grader was playing the recorder so I thought it would be just a fun way to use a few hours we had to spare;” Jackson recalled.
What started out as idle curiosity soon blossomed into full-blown inspiration as the Flute Alors weaved contemporary Jazz with timeless Classical music to create a spellbinding performance. “You know, nearly anyone can play a recorder and pick out ‘Hot Cross Bun’ or another little ditty like that, but this group took the recorder and created a full musical experience;” said Jackson.
After the performance, the Jacksons purchased some CDs and went home, but their inspiration lasted much longer as Jackson’s daughter went from playing short pieces on her recorder to playing more complex ones, like Johann Sebastian Bach’s ‘Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring’ within a few weeks.
“After that, I knew that more recorder students in our area needed to hear the possibilities their seemingly simple instrument has,” said Jackson. For curiosity’s sake, she contacted the quartet through their website to see if the group would even consider coming to Kindersley. Within a few days, a member of the group replied with information on their western tour in February 2018. What was a whimsical idea suddenly turned into a possibility.
Now, roughly nine months later, the Flute Alors are coming to Kindersley on February 27, first to Westbury School for students and then to the Norman Ritchie Centre for music lovers of all ages. The performance at the Westbury School will be free for the students, followed by a 1-hour workshop for recorder players.

The evening performance at the Norman Ritchie Centre starts at 7:00 p.m.; tickets are available at the door only, $15/adult. $10/Student (6-18), Children 5 and under are free. The Westbury SCC will be providing refreshments as a fundraiser for their group. All other proceeds from the event will go to the Kindersley Rotary Club.
“I’m excited for Kindersley to experience these highly-talented performers and to have a chance to be inspired by their creativity.” Jackson says that the events would not have been possible without the teamwork and aid by several groups, members and even businesses in Kindersley.
The Town of Kindersley Community Initiatives, Kindersley Rotary Club, Kindersley and District Arts Council, Westberry School, and the Travelodge Hotel all pitched in their services and knowledge to bring this dynamic quartet to Kindersley. “I had a hope, an inspiration, but it is the teamwork of many people that are bringing this event together.”
