Local RCMP Held Town Hall Meeting in Kerrobert Wednesday Night

Kindersley/Kerrobert/Eston RCMP Held Town Hall Meeting

Around 125 people from surrounding areas were in the Prairieland Community Center in Kerrobert for the RCMP Town Hall meeting last night.

The meeting was opened by S/Sgt Ray Blais from Kindersley who went through information which had been provided in handouts. According to statistics of the area from the last 3 years, there has been no increase in property crimes. The crowd was also informed by S/Sgt. Blais that the local three detachments, which work together as one, are supposed to have a staff of 16 officers and 3 clerks. However, currently there are only 14 officers.

S/Sgt. Blais explained that the RCMP’s current priorities in the area are reducing and preventing property crime along with traffic safety with high priority on impaired drivers. Extra resources are available and have been brought in. For example, the Provincial Tactical Team was brought in last October when the wildfires were getting close to the Detachment area. Approximately 40 tactical team members arrived in Kindersley as preparation for any disaster that might occur in the area. Fortunately the fires were contained before reaching Kindersley area.

There are current programs which are definite assets in crime prevention, including Crime Stoppers, Citizens on Patrol and the Rural Crime Watch. Other resources include targeting areas of high crime, using the Kindersley RCMP Facebook page, and doing curfew checks on prolific criminial offenders. All of these options assist with crime prevention and investigation.

Also attending the meeting was S/Sgt. Greg Abbott from the Central District Management team in Saskatoon. S/Sgt. Greg Abbott spoke on the importance of having positive youth involvement with the RCMP. Abbott also emphasized the importance of reporting any and all crime that occurs. All emergency responders were asked to stand up and were acknowledged for their critical role and work in helping the RCMP.

S/Sgt. Blais addressed questions that had been submitted earlier that day. Followed by an open floor to the crowd for questions which were answered by S/Sgt. Blais and S/Sgt. Abbott.

The meeting proved helpful to both audience and RCMP alike, as locals appreciated the information and the RCMP were able to hear the concerns of the public. The main concern being rural crime and how people can protect themselves.

The Detachment will be hosing another Town Hall meeting on March 27th, at 7:30p.m. in Eston at the Community Centre.
