After nearly 53 years on the job, a Saskatchewan civil servant is ready for retirement.

Walter Mikulsky started his career in the public service in 1963 and — with 52 years and seven months under his belt — he is the longest-serving government employee currently working in the province.

On his first day on the job, Woodrow Lloyd was the premier of Saskatchewan and George Reed was a rookie with the Roughriders.

Mikulsky, a facilities planner for several decades with the Ministry of Education, was responsible for the building of more than 30 schools in Saskatchewan.

“It’s been a variety of different work and four different ministries that I worked at,” Mikulsky, 72, said Wednesday during a special event. “I enjoyed it and I enjoyed the people as well.”

As a retirement gift, Mikulsky was presented with a school bell.
