Malloy, Decoteau crowned champions at Huskie Open

Gaelan Malloy and Waylon Decoteau were both crowned champions in their respective weight classes at the Huskie Open in Saskatoon on the weekend.

Malloy wrestled to a 2-0 record in the 72-kilogram class while Decoteau posted a 3-0 record in the 100kg to help the men’s team to 38 team points, good enough for a third-place overall finish.

Also wrestling on the men’s side were Daniel Amberson (54kg), Conner McLachlan (57kg), Parker Berard(65kg), Lucas Hoffert (68kg), Brett Kryger (76kg), Sean Belisle (90kg) and Parker Florell (120kg).

Hoffert captured second place in his weight class while Berard and Belisle (pictured) both placed third in their competitions.

On the women’s side, Kayla Brodner and Kristine Longeau continued their strong seasons, both earning top spot with their weekend performances. Brodner won all three of her matches in the women’s 67-kg class, while Longeau went 4-0 in the 72kg.

Maeghan Wild had the only other podium finish on the women’s side, placing third in the 59kg as the women’s team finished third in the team standings with 30 points.

The men’s team is in action this weekend, travelling west to compete in the University of the Fraser Valley’s Cascades Classic. The next action for the women’s team will be the Canada West Championships on Feb. 5 in Winnipeg.
