A new year begins at the stroke of midnight, and with it, ringing in some changes you should know about at the start of 2016.
Here are some new things that will take effect, beginning Jan. 1.
Saskatchewan
According to the provincial government, there will be a 1.3 per cent increase on all Saskatchewan income tax brackets and tax credit amounts, matching the national rate of inflation.
Amendments to the essential services legislation (Part VII of the Saskatchewan Employment Act) will take effect, removing the definition of “essential services.” The changes will also ensure alternative methods are available to settle workplace disputes.
Saskatoon
Smokers in Saskatoon are prohibited to smoke and vape in outdoor public areas owned and operated by the City.
City water and wastewater service fees will be increased by about 9.5 per cent. This means a typical monthly residential bill for water, wastewater and infrastructure charges will increase by $8 to $87.02.
Landfill rates will also be increased, varying in price depending on the weight and type of loads.
Transit fares will be changing in the new year, but it won’t take effect until Feb. 1.
Regina
The city’s water utility rates will increase by 5 per cent, which means about $7.40 per month for the average water consumer.
Landfill rates will see a change for smaller loads of 200 kg or less, at a decreased rate of $10. Vehicles over 200 kg will be paying a bit more from $75 to $80.
Transit users will also see an increase in bus fares in both cash fares and passes on Jan. 1.
