The Province of Saskatchewan welcomes a new Minister of Agriculture as previous minister Lyle Stewart announced his resignation order to focus on his battle with cancer.
David Marit, MLA for Wood River, and previous Minister of Highways and Infrastructure; was appointed to take Stewart’s place just last week. Premier Scott Moe said that while he regrets Stewart leaving the position, he looks forward to Marit fulfilling a new role.
“I am confident that Dave will bring an important perspective to his new portfolios, and I look forward to working with him as we stand up for Saskatchewan,” Moe said in a recent media release.
A busy father and grandfather of two, Marit currently owns and operates a farm with his brother, juggling not only his personal and professional life but also an extensive volunteer life as well.
Former Minister Lyle Stewart was from Pense, Saskatchewan, and one of the first members in the newly formed Saskatchewan Party. In 1999, he was elected as an oppositional MLA for Thunder Creek, and spent much of his time acting as the critic in the agricultural arena. When the Saskatchewan Party gained government he continued to serve the Lumsden-Morse area, winning elections in 2007, 2011 and 2016. According to the media release, Stewart has no plans of retiring from the MLA position he has held for nearly 20 years.
After such extensive service, it is small wonder that Stewart resigned with some sadness. “Agriculture is a very important portfolio in this province and it has been a tremendous honour to serve as Saskatchewan’s Agriculture Minister under two great Premiers over the past six years.”
Moe added that Stewart may not be fading from the agricultural scene entirely. “Lyle Stewart will remain a strong mentor and advisor to our cabinet when it comes to supporting our agriculture sector while we stand with him in his battle against cancer.”
