Remembrance Season: How to Wear a Poppy the Right Way

Wear a Poppy to Remember

We are currently in the Remembrance period, a time when we wear poppies to honour our Veterans. Each year there are common questions such as, “Which side do I wear a Poppy?” or “How soon to start wearing a Poppy?”.

The Royal Canadian Legion has provided guidelines to Canadians on the approbate and respectful wearing of the lapel Poppy. Although, wearing a Poppy is a personal expression of Remembrance and how you wear your poppy is your individual choice.

Below are some tips for proper Poppy Protocol:

How to Wear a Poppy

  • The Poppy should be worn with respect on the left side, over the heart.
  • You should not use a pin to affix the Poppy that obstructs the Poppy as it is a sacred symbol of remembrance.

When to Wear a Poppy

  • A Poppy is to be worn during the Remembrance period, from the last Friday in October until November 11th.
  • Poppies can be worn to the funeral of a veteran or a memorial service

When to Remove Poppy

  • Poppies can be worn into the evening of Remembrance Day after the Remembrance Day Ceremony. Some, however, can choose to remove their Poppies at the conclusion of the ceremony and place it on the cenotaph or a wreath as a sign of respect.
  • Once a Poppy is removed it should be stored appropriately or be disposed of respectfully.

Canadians are encouraged to wear Poppies not only to honour and remember our Veterans but to also take a moment and reflect this Remembrance season.
