Renaming Kindersley

The Town of Kindersley wants to be a city. For decades!

And now? The paperwork is being prepared. The wheels are in motion. The possible deed is only months away. With the deed comes an interesting situation.

The Town of Kindersley will, technically, be “reincorporated”. The documents will give us
a whole new level of administrative ability. The perception of our humble abode will be elevated. We will be a new entity (although we are well over 100 years old).

Let’s add a twist to this scenario. With these new documents, we could conceivably rename the town. To whatever we want.

For a number of reasons, I don’t think that will happen. But stranger things have happened.

Beijing, China, used to be Peking. Nunavut used to be the Northwest Territories (or at least a part of the territory). Kitchener, Ontario, used to be called Berlin.

What name would you consider if you were to rename the town???

Carlington: My grandfather, Carl Baker, was an early settler in this area – his homestead was just on the east side of the Motherwell dam (which used to be called the Town dam). Grandpa was here before the town was named. He proclaimed at one point that he would have loved to have seen the town named “Carlington”. No prejudice here – that was his actual name!! And to have a town named after you??

Sackville: I looked at the current town council. One name lent itself to a city nomenclature – “Sackville” (OK, the “ville” thing might not work too well)! There is a great English legacy in such a name. You can check out the name on the truth-generating website called Wikipedia.

Energy: If we can have one name descriptions that are related to our town, like Synergy, Edge, and Insight, why not Energy? Our motto has been, “Experience the Energy”. Now we could tell people to come and “Experience Energy.”

290: We like sports. We thrive on numbers that populate the sports jerseys of our town. We are technically part of the Rural Municipality of Kindersley No. 290. This has tradition written all over it! Numbers are memorable. Wouldn’t you like to go around telling people you are from “290”? No one would forget where you are from. No one would know where you are from!!

____________: I’m sure you can come up with another name.

Let’s gather some suggestions for a new name. Contact me and I’d be glad to put the list together and submit your suggestions to town council.

The small print: If I was a betting man, the odds on a name change would be the same as the Maple Leafs winning the Stanley Cup. As a bit of a theology type of person, a more apt description might be that the name will change when “hell freezes over.”

Irregardless (heaven help my English teacher – I’m sure I’ll be struck down for using that word), let’s have some fun!!!
