Saskatchewan Polytechnic Discontinues Recreation Services

Source: SPSA News Release, June 1, 2018

The Saskatchewan Polytechnic Students’ Association (SPSA) has been informed by Saskatchewan Polytechnic Administration that Recreation Services at three of the four campuses (Prince Albert, Moose Jaw, and Saskatoon) was discontinued as of May 31, 2018.

This includes the elimination of all athletics programs, intramurals programs, closure of all recreation facilities including fitness centres, and termination of all recreation services staff.

SPSA President, Justin Skwark: “We were informed yesterday morning that the move to abolish recreation services was made to align with a new wellness strategy that is yet to be developed.
We have requested that recreation facilities remain open during this transition, which has not been supported to date. We will continue to hold discussions and advocate on behalf of our students for the services they deserve. It is troubling to the student body that tuition continues to rise, yet student services are being cut or reduced.”

Saskatchewan Polytechnic Students’ Association represents over 14,000 students across the province.
