Saskatoon man rebuilds backyard luge track

A backyard luge track is back in action.

Last winter, Blair McDaid built the track for his now eight-year-old daughter Ophelia.

Riders carry a toboggan to the top of a wooden platform, then race down a track made of ice and snow.

And now, he’s brought it back.

“Well, I’ve got the frame built,” he said. “I’ve got the tires up from last year.”

McDaid said this winter’s lack of snow has been a bit of a problem. Currently, he only has enough of the white stuff to build half the track.

Still, he’s confident that conditions will improve.

“It’s Saskatchewan,” he said. “I was looking on the Internet, and some of my latest videos of it were into April, so that’s lots of time.”

The story went viral last winter, and managed to get picked up by international news outlets like CNN.

“It’s kind of a funny thing that something as silly as this can get that much reach,” he said. “That’s what happens these days.”
