As outdoor racing drew to a close, the Saskatchewan Motocross Association (SMA) wrapped up its season and participated in a memorial race in honor of Lucas Backman.
The eighth and final round in the SMA provincial races was held on September 17, at the Millstone Raceway in Yorkton, SK; where approximately 200 riders from the Pee Wee classes all the way to the MX3 and MX2 pro classes battled for the last chance of gaining points in the 2017 season. The winners of each class can be found at live.tracksideresults.com/sask.
Many riders in the SMA, now finished their provincial race season, decided to hit the road again, this time for a memorial race in Lloydminster. Lucas Backman was an avid member of the local motocross club and dedicated son, brother, and friend when a tragic accident took his life on September 24, 2011.
A track just outside of Lloydminster, the Lucas Bachman Memorial Raceway, was built and dedicated by his family in Bachman’s memory. The track is open for racing 7 days a week, and once a year near the end of September the track hosts a province-wide memorial race.
The day ran in a relaxed format, where riders race for fun, not for points, and those who had never raced before had an opportunity to participate in a “non-race race”. Formatted races were not the only thing going on that day, as one particular race was a fast and fun relay race, while another race called a “goon “ race sported creatively dressed riders pulling stunts and tricks.
“This is one of the best ways to remember Lucas,” commented Daryl Murphy, SMA board member, and rider. “He lived life to its fullest, and we know he would want us to do the same.”
A final event for the SMA in 2017 is their year end banquet and AGM on November 25, in Saskatoon. Final awards and certificates will be presented, and all sponsors and volunteers recognized for their tireless efforts. Outdoor tracks across the province will now lie quietly, waiting for next spring.
