CHALLENGE TODAY, CREATE TOMORROW
About WCA
1959 a number of parents created a school for their children with disabilities in the Kindersley area. Over the years, the opportunities and programs evolved to meet the changing needs of those children as they became adults. In 1972 what is now West Central Abilities Inc. was officially incorporated. WCA currently supports a number of individuals with disabilities through various programs and residential services. The work is done alongside various others supports including families, employers, SARC, Community Living Service Delivery, employment services, and health care providers including doctors, pharmacists, counsellors, optometrists, dentists, occupational therapists, etc.
What WCA Does
WCA provides opportunities for each person served to live the best quality of life possible. WCA uses a Person Centered Planning model to work with individuals and their support team. The team includes staff, family members, friends, and anyone else the individual identifies in order to offer activities and programs to meet each person’s needs.
At the activity centre, clients participate in academic, recreational, life skills, arts, communication, therapy and physically active programs. Outside of care programs teaching is done through reading, printing, playing educational games on the touch screen computer, cooking, planning nutritious and balanced meals, dancing, playing board games and physical games such as horseshoes, parachute games, ladder ball, etc.
The community based program builds partnerships with community members and businesses through volunteer or paid employment opportunities for the individuals served. Individuals volunteer at a local salon, elementary school, a local kennel and deliver Meals on Wheels. Clients visit and join in on activities at Heritage Manor and Caleb Village and enjoy other activities in the community such as WCEC’s walking track and Motherwell Reservoir path, and much more!
Information for families…
West Central Abilities Inc. is operating at current capacity with opportunity to grow and transition students into person-centered programs. It is optimal to begin consultation with families early on to discuss serving their children’s future needs. Expansions in services may need to be created in day programs or for residential living (group, apartment, semi-independent, transition home etc.). It can take years to apply for these opportunities, fundraise, and build or plan for accommodations. Planning ahead with ensure services are available when they are needed.
What is the next step?
Build a relationship with your Community Based Organization, West Central Organization, West Central Abilities. Begin discussing your child’s transition to person-centered services to best meet their future needs. Families are always welcome to visit and become acquainted. Students are always welcome to participate in some of the programs in conjunction with the school. Students may have already attended for parts of the summer and experienced some of WCA’s programs. The more information and contact WCA has with families and students before the transition, the more likely the outcome will be successful.
