Stealth quiet Rush in Saskatchewan squad’s home debut

A dead silent fourth quarter from the Saskatchewan Rush helped propel the Vancouver Stealth past the Saskatoon-based lacrosse squad Friday night.

The visiting Stealth outscored Saskatchewan 4-0 in the fourth to down the Rush 13-11 in the Rush’s first-ever home game at Saskatoon’s SaskTel Centre.

Vancouver’s effort, which saw the Stealth jump to a three-goal lead early in the game, was led by forward Corey Small. The St. Catharines, Ont. native topped the scoring sheet with five goals, including four of his team’s final five points.

Saskatchewan, who were playing in front of a crowd of 9,147, were led by defenceman Chris Corbeil, from Oakville, Ont., and forward Robert Church, from Coquitlam, B.C. Both players scored three goals.

The Rush, thanks to a seven-goal effort in the second quarter, led 9-7 at the half. The squad kept the two-goal lead in the third but were unable to hold on in the fourth.

Both teams now sit at 1-1. Saskatchewan won its Jan. 2 season opener 10-8 against the Calgary Roughnecks while Vancouver lost to the New England Black Wolves 17-7 on Jan. 9.

Saskatchewan’s next game, set for Jan. 29, will see the Colorado Mammoth visit Saskatoon.

The Rush moved to Saskatchewan from Edmonton after winning the National Lacrosse League championship last season.
