Stuffed After A Great Smiley Fowl Supper!

I am stuffed! Literally stuffed. Why? Because I ate too much at the Smiley United Church Fowl
supper. It’s an annual event that helps raise funds for their community. Organizers Kim Ward,
Lorrene Johnson and Rella Lavoie had their work cut out for them, again; making sure there
was enough turkey etc. to feed the masses who always come out and support this great cause.

And there was a MOUNTAIN of mashed potatoes and gravy, buns, salads, veggies, stuffing
and of course, turkey. Desserts were aplenty with all flavours of pies and whipped cream and
coffee. Approximately 100 people came out and partook of this gastronomic feast. Many
residents from Kindersley have been coming here for years and they continue to come out and
show their support. Fowl suppers like this were once a stable tradition in many small Saskatchewan towns. However, COVID-19 made it harder to keep these events going, and as families grow older and move away, maintaining these community gatherings has become more challenging, but thankfully, Smiley’s is still a roaring success!

Events like this wouldn’t be possible without the many volunteers who help with cooking,
cleaning, bussing tables and generally doing whatever it takes to get the job done. Steve
Sawchuck has been the “unofficial turkey carver” for many years and he said that he always is
happy when he sees all the people who come out. One downfall he joked is that he feels
trapped in the kitchen and one of the last to eat!

You know, for $20, where else can you get a full course turkey buffet and connect with friends and socialize to your hearts content?

Smiley is a small town 22 km west and 18 km north of Kindersley.
