Automated accounts are certainly active online, but there are limits to their reach, researchers say
Wading through the deluge of information and political messaging ahead of an election is hard enough. When you add in fake Twitter accounts that try to manipulate what you see, it gets even more complicated.
But while bots attract a lot of attention and stoke fear, researchers say the actual threat is overblown, and that they’re only one part of a bigger system aimed at manipulating opinion online.
