After a strong start to the month with a shutout game over the Notre Dame Hounds, the Klippers hit a streak of tough luck—losing six games in a row.
Now facing off with the Flin Flon Bombers, the Klippers look to make decisive wins to gain ground in their standings.
The Klippers swung into December with a few trades, landing Nipawin Hawks’ Keilan Olson (’98 Forward) and Bryson Cecconi (’99 Forward) in exchange for Christian Bosa (’98 Forward), a 2019 3rd round pick, and future considerations. Olson has 24 points in 24 games this season, a record that puts him at the top of the Klippers score-list, and Cecconi has 4 points in 10 games. Klippers veteran Jordan Funk was exchanged to the Flin Flon Bombers for a player Development Fee and a 2019 6th round pick.
The new team faced long-time rival Notre Dame Hounds on Tuesday, December 5th and Olson made his mark in the game as two powerful assists propelled the game 3-0 Klippers favour. Klippers goalie Justin Close blocked a total of 30 shots to make his first shutout game of the season. The following night saw the tables turned as the Hounds skated off the ice with a 5-0 shutout game over the Klippers.
In back to back games with the Weyburn Red Wings on the weekend of December 8-9, the Klippers fell on both games, 4-1 and 4-3 respectively.
Returning from their road trip, the Klippers hosted the Humbolt Broncos for their 5th battle of the season last Tuesday, but saw no better luck than their previous four games with the Broncos as the score at the end of the day was 4-2 Broncos favour.
The Klippers looked to bounce back the next day (last Wednesday) as they hosted the Nipawin Hawks for the first time since acquiring two of their team members. Nipawin, however, didn’t slow on its winning streak as they clipped in just one point ahead of the Klippers in a 4-3 game.
Saturday’s home game with the Melville Mustangs didn’t turn out as hoped as the Mustangs carried the ice 6-3 in the final. The Klippers now look to their hosting back to back games with the Flin Flon Bombers on Monday and Tuesday to gain ground in their overall standings. Both teams have ground to make in the standings, so fans are sure to see some exciting hockey.
The Klippers will end the year 2017 with an away/home game exchange with the Battlefords North Stars on December 29 and 30. Be sure to come on down to the West Central Events Centre on Saturday, December 30 at 7:30 to cheer the boys on!
