Roller Derby Ready to Rumble
Breathless laughter fills the air as the blades click and slide against the scuffed floor; the roller derby practice is underway. Since 2014, the roller derby has knit its members together with moments of fun and activity.
With around 50 members in its ranks, the roller derby has attracted participants from six years to adult ages. “We have 3 levels, plus an adult class,” explained Emily Meyer, a current member of the Roller Derby, “Our junior members may start at the beginner level or in level 2; from there it takes some dedicated work and skill to move up in the levels.”
The adult team, the Crude Hitters, is a mixed team where the members wear slick uniforms with catchy, tongue in cheek names on their backs. “My derby name is La Rock U,” laughed Meyer, “but anyone can choose the name they want.”
Meyer says that the Crude Hitters focuses on having fun and pulling together as a team. “We all try to show up and be there for each other, and we encourage each other in all areas of life, not just on the floor. We have people from all walks of life, and you don’t have to be fit in order to join. If you want to derby, you can derby.”
Although the sport is high contact, Meyer noted that the games and practices are about fun than anything else. With its great potential for a healthy, fun way to get moving, and it’s very low number of injuries per year, Meyer encourages people to join up and overcome their reservations.
The Crude Hitters first home game, better known as a ‘bout’, is scheduled for May 13 with the Drumheller team. “We are practicing already,” confirmed Meyer, “and we are also looking out for volunteers to make these bouts possible.” If anyone is interested in joining the derby, in registering their children in the junior classes, or in helping out at the bouts, be sure to check out their website at kindersleyrollerderby.ca
