Whirls and Twirls Celebrate 60 Years

Fun, socialization, and exercise are just some of the benefits of Kindersley’s local square dance club, Whirls and Twirls. For members in Kindersley, Coleville and Smiley area, having a good time is the number one goal of the club.

Swinging the festivity into action on Saturday afternoon, couples from Whirls and Twirls hit the dance floor; joined by couples from Unity, Lloydminster, Moose Jaw, Regina, and even Calgary. To make the event even more special, the club invited their long-time friend and caller, Lorne Smith from Calgary, to be the caller for the evening. Lorne Smith has been a square dance caller for over 32 years; based in Calgary, he mostly calls for several clubs in Calgary, as well as calling for special  events such as Saturday’s.

It was Lorne Smith who held caller classes in the Kindersley area back in the early 2000’s. Attending the class was the Whirls and Twirls current caller, Marvin Dales. “When I started to learn how to square dance, I got interested in learning how to call,” Dales remembered. “Then I got up on stage and suddenly realized that also meant I had to sing.” Dales persevered, in spite of this surprise, and soon found that he not only loved the calling duty but the singing as well.  Dales celebrates 10 years of calling this year, and the club honored his dedication by presenting him, on behalf of the club, a plaque commemorating 60 years.

Also present that evening, were two club members of note:  Mary Stevens, who currently holds the position for the most amount of years dancing in a row, a total of 60 years, and Francis Swan, the longest club member.  These two ladies showed a remarkable spirit and grace as they joined the dancers on the floor and celebrated their 60 years of membership. “I just love square dancing,” remarked Stevens. “As people, we should always be learning new things, and square dancing is one way we can do that.” Swan has also kept up her membership, in spite of a few health problems in the past. “If you can walk, you can square dance,” she stated emphatically, “I have made so many good friends from border to border, and there is no reason for me to stop just yet.”

Whirls and Twirls is a fun-loving club, with friendships lasting a whole lifetime. I wish them another fantastic 60 years in Kindersley.
