Kurt Ferguson knows all too well the importance of keeping STARS in the sky. That’s because he is one of the program’s VIPs – Very Important Patients.
The helicopter air ambulance responded when Ferguson had a work-site accident while helping with construction of a building. He fell onto rebar and was seriously injured.
By sharing his story at the Night with STARS fundraising gala, being held at the Delta Regina on April 8, Ferguson hopes to inspire donations to the STARS emergency response program.
“It’s quite an interesting story … that will hit home to a lot of people,” said Vanessa Headford, development officer for the STARS Foundation at its Regina base. “And we’ll have his surgeon there, as well, to give a bit of the story.”
After his accident, Ferguson decided to go back to school, studying occupational safety in Newfoundland.
“We can tell facts; we can give numbers. But to have somebody tell what’s happened to them is different,” Headford said. “It’s nice to have our VIPs speak for us.”
In its fourth year, the STARS gala will feature live and silent auctions, a raffle, dinner, dancing, and a performance by Jess Moskaluke, 2014 and 2015 Canadian Country Music Association female artist of the year.
Last year’s fundraising gala raised $113,000.
