Oh Canada

I’m still trying to adjust to the new words in our national anthem, “Oh, Canada”.

To remain inclusive, the line“in all thy sons command,” has been changed to “in all of us command.” In our day and age, that is certainly a good substitute! Twice this year I have been caught bravely singing the wrong words – totally patriotic but a bit behind the times!

We live in the whirlpool of political correctness, chaos politics and gender identity. I’m not even sure I know how to describe someone anymore. I’m not even sure how to describe our country or our world anymore.

But we must try.

This is where the artist shines!!

Pictures, story, sound, words, melody, sculpture, craft, visuals, drama.

While I have gladly lived in the world of the artists for the greater part of my life (and even been employed for a decade to serve professionally in this enclave of souls), I find the artist’s soul is often troubled. Somehow the artists of this world tend to forecast the changes, to describe looming realities, and to lead the  charge towards a brave (or perhaps fearful) new world.

This is a time where artists rule. We should not be surprised that our continental leaders, Trump and Trudeau, are both dramatic, in the fullest sense of the word. With broad strokes and spectacular gestures, a path for the future is painted for us.

I want to challenge you this summer.

Seek out the work of artists.

Start with your chosen profession or your passion.

How are those on the “leading edge” painting the current world. Are we involved in a time of protection or risk? Are we despairing or hopeful? Will me merely survive or thrive?

Just a little hint – artists will help us see what we can’t see.

But . . . and a rather big BUT . . . Artists start with their own observations and notions about the world. They portray truth from their own perspective. While the artist may picture a new world, that world is only as good as the one who generates the picture.

I want to challenge you this summer.

Seek out artists.

Find the heart of the art, and you will find the future of our world.
